Halloween Boo-kmarks

This time of year there is SO much candy floating around! I love it all but sometimes it’s nice to give out treats that aren’t so sweet. If you’re looking for an idea to give to trick-or-treaters that doesn’t involve a bucket of sugar, then this is the project for you. It involves DIY bookmarks – and your favorite colors from CutCardStock!

“Eye” want to show you 2 ideas today. Ha! For my projects, I’m pulling from my stash of die cuts; however, most of these can be recreated on an electric cutting machine. As always, I try to work from basic shapes because not everyone has special supplies like these. Take a look below for how to make each bookmark!

Eyeball Bookmark

This project starts with 3 circles, about 2″ in diameter, cut with nested circle die cuts (Keep It Simple) from the Classic Crest Solar White paper. I prepared a sentiment (BFC Wicked Witch) on my Cricut machine first, and arced it to fit a 2″ circle. This is printed in red pen.

I then took the 2nd and 3rd smaller circles in the set and cut the irises in Pop Tone Blue Raspberry, Pop Tone Limeade and Pop Tone Orange Fizz. The black is cut with Pop Tone Black Licorice. Finally, the smallest whites of the eyes are cut with the Classic Crest Solar White paper.

For the word “eye” I have cut die cut letters in Stardream Metallic Jupiter (these are Tim Holtz) and glued them to the outer edge of one of the white eyeballs.

The colored middles are glued together, then placed on the upper corner of the white eyeballs. From here, I’ve taken the same red pen and drawn thin lines to look like veins in strategic spots. All the circles are glued on each other, in an overlapped manner. If you want a finish look to the bookmark, cut 3 more Classic Crest Solar White circles to finish off the back.

Coffin Bookmark

This project comes from a die cut set that I have in my stash (Recollections) featuring a coffin and some webs and spiders. I did check the Cricut Design Library and they have several versions of this cut also. I’m starting with the writing by printing out the sentiment (BFC Wicked Witch) in a stacked manner to fit my cut. This is done on Basis Soft Pink.

Next, I cut out the sentiment with my coffin shaped die cut. I’ve also cut a strip of DCS Black Glitter to run across the middle like a stripe. I’ve added stitched letters (Queen and Co.) from die cuts to spell “R-I-P” and these are cut with Stardream Metallic Crystal.

My spiders are cut in the DCS Black Glitter also, then I’ve added a piece of twine to the back and glued the 2 spiders together over it. This will be the tail of the bookmark.

The bookmark tail is glued on the back, along with a piece of the spider web, cut in Pop Tone Black Licorice. I then added a backing to this one, from the Stardream Metallic Crystal, and trimmed around the project, leaving an 1/8″ of an edge.

I found both of these projects easy to recreate, so you can make several at one time! This is good for trick-or-treaters, classroom Halloween parties…or even to give to your friend who is an avid reader. What version of a bookmark would YOU create?
