Goal-Getter Birthday: Crafting a Custom Hockey Jersey Card

I am so excited to share my latest project with you today! Sweta here with you today. Making custom sports cards for athletes and sports fans is always a winning strategy. For this design, I built a custom hockey jersey card featuring a custom jersey, hockey stick, and a textured subway-art background. By pairing bold blues with embossed textures, you can easily create a professional, action-packed card for any sports lover.

When you are crafting a sports card with multiple die-cut layers, choosing paper with rich texture and strong weight is essential. Consequently, I selected a sleek collection of cardstocks from CutCardStock to build this athletic design. I chose Navy Blue 100lb Cover for the deep jersey base and background matting. Next, I brought in Blue Calico for the lighter jersey accents and number backings. Additionally, I used Heavy Recycled White 5×7 Cardstock for the embossed background panel and selected the shimmering Stardream Metallic Soft White to die-cut a subtle, glistening hockey net.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Creating the Inked Embossed Background

To begin, I created a dynamic background using the Spellbinders Sports Talk Embossing Folder. After running my Heavy Recycled White cardstock through the machine, I lightly inked the surface of the embossed panel with Chipped Sapphire and Blueprint Sketch Distress Inks. Consequently, the raised sports words catch the ink whereas the debossed background spaces remain white. This simple technique creates a cool, distressed subway-art look.

2. Die Cutting the Athletic Elements

Next, I ran my cardstocks through my die-cutting machine using my sports dies. I cut the jersey body, hockey stick, and puck from Navy Blue 100lb Cover. Then, I cut the shoulder trim, sleeve stripes, and number from Blue Calico. In addition, I cut the matting for number “18” from Stardream Metallic Soft White. To create a realistic, shimmering hockey net, I used the Altenew Garden Trellis Die with the gorgeous Stardream Metallic Soft White cardstock.

3. Assembling the Custom Hockey Jersey

After cutting all the pieces, I began building the jersey focal point. I layered the Blue Calico shoulder piece and sleeve trims onto the Navy Blue shirt using liquid glue. Next, I assembled the layered number “18” and heat embossed “GOAL-GETTER” across the back. To give the jersey a realistic feel, I added thin white accent strips to represent jersey stitching.

4. Stamping the Sentiment

Before assembling the full card, I stamped my birthday greeting. I used the All Star Sentiments Stamp Set to stamp “IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY” in deep blue ink onto a white strip. Then, I matted the sentiment onto a thin piece of Navy Blue cardstock to match the overall color scheme.

5. Final Assembly

For the last step, I mounted the inked background panel onto a Navy Blue mat layer and glued it onto a white A2 card base. Next, I adhered the cut out trellis piece across the bottom to serve as our hockey net. I mounted the matted sentiment near the top left using liquid glue. Afterward, I placed foam tape strips across the back of the hockey jersey to give it a strong pop of dimension over the net. Finally, I attached the hockey stick and puck at an angle across the bottom corner to finish the scene.
