Crafting a Realistic Blue Jay Card

I love bringing nature into my craft room, and there is nothing quite as striking as the bold blues of a Blue Jay. Sweta here, and I am so excited to share my latest project with you today! For this design, I wanted to focus on intricate paper piecing to assemble a highly detailed bird and floral scene. By using multiple shades of blue cardstock alongside bright pops of yellow and deep greens, you can achieve an incredible amount of life and realism in your layered designs. So let’s get to work crafting a realistic blue jay card!

When you are working with complex die sets, having a diverse palette of high-quality papers is the key to success. Consequently, I selected a beautiful array of cardstocks from CutCardStock to create this feathered friend. For the rich, layered depths of the bird, I used a combination of DCS Textured Indigo Blue, Blue Calico, and a deep Navy Blue cardstock. Additionally, I anchored the floral focal point with the vibrant Astrobright Solar Yellow and the wonderfully textured DCS Pearl Green Curry. To frame everything beautifully, I brought in the gorgeous shimmer of Stardream Metallic Soft White, all built onto a sturdy base made from Classic CREST Smooth 130 lb.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Die Cutting the Feathered Layers

To begin, the intricate pieces from the Altenew Feathered Beauty Die Set were run through my die-cutting machine. Using a collection of gorgeous blues, I cut the main body and detailed wing layers from Textured Indigo Blue and the deepest Navy Blue. Next, I selected Astrobright Yellow for the flowers, Pearl Green Curry for the textured foliage, and the elegant Stardream Metallic Soft White for the shimmering accent frame. For the final outer layer, I brought in the lovely Blue Calico.

2. Enhancing Color with Ink Blending

To elevate flat paper to something realistic, I added custom ink blending before assembly. I shaded the edges of the bird’s feathers with a coordinating deep blue ink to emphasize each individual layer. For the flowers, I added a warm orange ink blending over the bright yellow base to give the petals a beautiful gradient sunset effect. Finally, I used a deep forest green ink to darken the shadows on the Green Curry leaves for extra dimension.

3. Assembling the Blue Jay

When putting this beautiful bird together, it is incredibly important to carefully follow the assembly guide included with the die set. Altenew has cleverly integrated keyholes into the die-cut pieces, which makes aligning the wings, tail, and body layers so much easier! As a final touch for the bird, I sprayed a bit of Prize Ribbon Distress Spritz directly onto the wings to give it a stunning, magical sparkle.

4. Building the Background Panels

To stage our scene, I die-cut a detailed border frame from Blue Calico and nestled the Stardream Soft White rectangle directly inside it. The metallic finish of the soft white paper gives a subtle sheen that reflects light beautifully behind our main elements. I then arranged and glued down the inked yellow flowers and green foliage along the bottom corner of the frame.

5. Final Assembly

For the last step I mounted the framed background directly onto an A2 card base made from the heavy-duty Classic CREST Smooth 130 lb. I tucked the fully assembled, sparkling Blue Jay above the floral cluster using a mix of liquid glue and strategically placed foam tape(under the top part of the body) to make it look like it’s mid-flight. I finished the card off by picking out a “Forever Grateful” sentiment banner from my stash to complete the project quickly.
