Tool-Rific Workshop: Crafting a Textured Mechanic & Garden Card

Hello; I’m Sweta from Table in the Attic and I am so excited to share my latest project with you today! Masculine and hobby-themed cards are always so much fun to design. For this project, I wanted to combine workshop tools and gardening elements into a vibrant, multi-layered layout. By mixing embossed kraft textures with colorful die cuts and subtle distress splatters, you can create a project packed with personality.

When assembling detailed tool layers, selecting papers with rich textures and contrasting colors makes a huge difference. Consequently, I pulled together a stunning variety of cardstocks from CutCardStock to bring this workshop scene to life. I selected Classic Crest Smooth Solar White for the base and stenciled background. For the embossed focal centerpiece, I used DCS Natural Twine Kraft and framed it with Canvas Vanilla Bean Brown. Furthermore, I brought in Bonsai Green, DCS Pearl Green Curry, and DCS Textured Adobo Orange for the gas and oil cans. To complete the tools and gloves, I used DCS Textured Indigo Blue, DCS Sand Castle Tan, and CCS Silver Glitter Cardstock.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Creating the Stenciled & Splattered Background

To begin, I cut a panel of Classic Crest Smooth Solar White cardstock. I placed the Brutus Monroe Gardening 101 Stencil around the outer edges of the panel. Then, I ink-blended the work glove silhouettes using Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink. Next, I softly blended Tea Dye Distress Ink along the outer border to create a warm, vintage vignette. To finish the rustic workshop look, I lightly unscrewed the nozzle of my Vintage Photo Distress Oxide Spray and added fine splatters across the panel.

2. Embossing the Centerpiece Oval

After completing the background, I die-cut an oval from DCS Natural Twine Kraft using the Honey Bee Stamps Sweet Stacks: Ovals Dies. I ran this kraft oval through my die-cutting machine inside the Honey Bee Stamps Gears 3D Embossing Folder. Consequently, the 3D folder created deep, realistic mechanical gear textures across the entire shape. Additionally, I cut a larger nesting oval frame from Canvas Vanilla Bean Brown to border the gear panel.

3. Die Cutting the Workshop Elements

Next, I cut all the pieces from the Honey Bee Stamps Lovely Layers: Tool Box Mechanics die set. I die-cut the large gas can base from Bonsai Green and the top embossed face from DCS Pearl Green Curry. For the small oil can, I cut the base from Canvas Vanilla Bean Brown and the front layer from DCS Textured Adobo Orange. Furthermore, I cut the work gloves from Textured Indigo Blue with Sand Castle Tan cuffs. Finally, I cut the wrench, screwdriver shaft, and other accents from shimmering CCS Silver Glitter Cardstock.

4. Assembling the Layers & Adding Highlights

Once all the pieces were cut, I assembled each tool using liquid glue. To bring out the embossed details, I stamped “You’re TOOL-RIFIC” onto the green can. Next, I added dark green and deep red shading to the embossed teardrops on the cans. For an extra touch of realism, I used a fine white gel pen to add clean shine highlights along the edges of the cans and tools.

5. Final Card Assembly

For the last step, I adhered the stenciled background panel onto an A2 card base made from Classic Crest Smooth Solar White 130 lb. Next, I glued the embossed kraft oval and the brown frame directly into the center using foam tape for dimension. Afterward, I used liquid glue behind the gas cans and gloves . Finally, I tucked the glittery wrench along the bottom corner with liquid adhesive adding foam tape under the screwdriver to give the arrangement striking dimension.
