Surprise Donuts & A Sweet Scrapbook Layout

I donut know about you, but surprise donuts at work sure make my day brighter! Cassie here, and there’s something so simple yet magical about an unexpected sweet treat. And let’s be honest—there’s no better time than during the long, cold month of January to receive surprise donuts. This delightful moment of joy became the inspiration behind this scrapbook layout, capturing both my love for donuts and the happiness they bring.

Getting Started

When planning this layout, I wanted to create a bold, eye-catching design that mimicked the shape and deliciousness of a real donut. To achieve this, I selected a large donut cut file in my Silhouette Studio software to use as my background. With the design in place, it was time to choose the perfect combination of cardstock to bring it to life.

To coordinate with the dotted patterned paper I selected, I chose a mix of rich, vibrant cardstock colors, all from CutCardStock:

Creating the Giant Donut

With my colors selected, I began cutting out my donut layers using my Silhouette Cameo. Here’s how I built my sweet creation:

  1. Cutting the Base – I used Wedding Cake White cardstock to cut out two donut base layers.
  2. Adding Realistic Texture – To give my donut a fried, golden-brown look, I inked the white cardstock layers using Distress Oxide Tea Dye ink. This blending technique gave it the perfect crispy edge! I also added shimmer brown ink splatters to enhance the toasted effect.
  3. Creating the Frosting – The frosting layer was cut from Pearlized Textured Jet Stream Blue cardstock. This shimmer finish mimicked the glossy, sugary surface of real frosting.
  4. Making Colorful Sprinkles – Instead of cutting individual sprinkle shapes, I backed the sprinkle openings in the frosting layer with small pieces of four different cardstock colors, creating a fun and colorful effect.
  5. Adding Dimension – To make the donut pop, I placed foam tape behind the frosting layer before adhering it to the donut base. This simple step added just the right amount of depth to the layout.

Assembling the Layout

Once my donut was complete, it was time to bring the entire layout together!

  1. Background Setup – I trimmed down my dotted patterned paper and centered it on a Wild Blueberry Navy cardstock base for contrast.
  2. Placing the Donut Cut File – The giant donut took center stage, making it the star of the design.
  3. Adding Photos – I arranged my photos in the lower right corner, ensuring they complemented the layout without overshadowing the main design element.
  4. Final Touches – To complete the layout, I added a playful title, coordinating embellishments, and enamel sprinkles for a fun, finishing touch.

This layout was such a joy to create! Not only did it capture the warm, happy feelings that surprise donuts bring, but it also allowed me to experiment with layering, textures, and ink blending techniques. The combination of CutCardStock’s high-quality cardstock made it easy to achieve a professional and polished look.
