Glowing Pumpkins

We are over half way through October and Halloween draws even nearer. Sharon here with a spooky night scene card!

I’m going to show you how to design a very simple but effective scene. We will start with the cardstock needed. I am using Pop-Tone Black Licorice and two weights of Neenah Classic Crest80lb and 110lb Cover.

You will need to cut the licorice and 80lb pieces down to A2 size. The 110lb needs cutting length wise, scoring and folding at 5.5in to give you a top folding A2 cardbase.

We will start by ink blending onto the 80lb piece. For this I am using Distress Inks in Carved Pumpkin, Wilted Violet and Abandoned Coral.

Start with the Carved Pumpkin diagonally from the bottom right to the middle and then the Wilted Violet from top left corner down until meeting with the Pumpkin, finally use the Abandoned Coral to blend both colors together smoothly.

You will only see the center of this through the die cut so don’t worry about the edges.

I am adding ‘stars’ to this, use Copic Opaque White and a fan shape brush to splatter across the inked piece.

Now put this to one side to allow the ink to dry and work with the Black Licorice piece. I am using a Halloween Scene die but you could use a simple circle die with a halloween silhouette. Line up the main die so it will cut the circle where the ink blending meets. I am making sure the pumpkin silhouettes have the Carved Pumpkin ink under them.

Using Tombow Mono Glue adhere the ink blended piece to your cardbase. Wet glue gives a bit of wiggle room to make sure everything is in line and there is no overlapping edge. You don’t want this as it will show around the edge of the Licorice piece.

The sentiment I am using is perfect for the scene, it fits perfectly on the bottom corner and works well with heat embossing. First dust your Licorice piece with an embossing tool because this stops any stray embossing powder from sticking. Then stamp with VersaMark ink. I am doing this a couple of times to make sure I get a good amount of ink on the card.

I am using Ranger Superfine White Powder. This is great for small text. Set your powder with a heat gun being careful not to smudge the melted powder. Again I use Tombow Mono Glue to fix my black piece in place so I have time to line it up properly before the glue dries. This makes sure fine sections like the branches stick down. I do add a weight to keep this flat while drying because the heat embossing can warp the card slightly.

The final stage is to add the witch. This die comes with both a witch and a haunted house as extras – I am just using the witch and having her flying across the aperture.

What do you do for halloween? Stay home and hand out candy or dress up with the kids and go trick-or-treating?
