Argyle Valentine’s Wood Decor

Yes, I am one of “those” people who decorate for each holiday. I like having a splash of color on my shelves, dining room, and end tables. Sometimes, I just can’t find the ‘thing’ I’m looking for, however. That is why I love crafting so much! You can create something unique to you, like this Valentine’s wood decor.

I saw this pattern on a set of pillows and wanted to make it in a brighter color scheme. The argyle pattern, using hearts, is a clever idea, and I knew I could recreate it with the CutCardStock papers!

I’m starting with a turquoise card stock that is discontinued, but try either the Pop Tone Blue Raspberry or the Astrobright Lunar Blue for something similar. Use one of these along with Wild Cherry Red and Lessebo Blossom Pink.

I’ll be covering a couple wooden hearts I found in the art section of Target. Cut your paper into the size you need for your wood decor. Then, cut out as many hearts using a die cut or a punch as you might need to cover the chosen blue paper panel.

Start with the first color of hearts – I started with the Lessebo Blossom Pink in a row, then alternated in between for the 2nd row. Finish covering your paper this way, gluing down AFTER you’ve lined them up. A good tip: line up the bottom of your heart point with the 2nd row above it. I did use a straight edge to help me.

Once those are secured, you’ll add the Wild Cherry Red hearts. Again, lay them down first before gluing them. I actually set up the whole pattern first before I glued. It’s also helpful to use a straight edge to set these up.

Next, I used an argyle stamp from my collection; however, another option is a straight edge and a gel pen. You can draw the dotted lines in between, and it looks very similar. In my case, I stamped over this with a see-through stamp alignment tool.

Take your wood heart shape and trace it over the patterned paper. Cut this shape out and trim off any excess edges.

I hesitated in throwing out the excess pieces, so I worked a little bit to be able to use the edge trims in a 2nd heart shape, too! I added more stitches after gluing these on another Lessebo Blossom Pink heart.

Apply a thin coat of Modge Podge glue to the wood shape, then add the card stock heart shape to the front. Allow this to dry for a few minutes, then apply a top coat. I recommend a very thin coat and a few strokes, so the ink from the stamp or pen doesn’t run.

That’s it! You have a Valentine’s wood decor piece and an instant pop of color for your home without much effort! CutCardStock products are my favorite option when I can’t find a patterned paper that I like. I simply make my own patterns!

What pattern would you create? I’d love to know in the comments. Thanks for joining me today!
