When your NBA team is in the playoffs on your birthday, you get a NBA themed birthday cake topper! This was a last minute decision on my part and luckily I had the perfect colors, Basis Blue and Basis Gold 80# cardstock for the cake topper.

I designed the cake topper on Design Space using a Golden Gate Bridge image and basketball image on a triangle base. This was actually pretty easy to design. The key is layers, layers and more layers.
I decided to use the Gold Glitter cardstock for the triangle to add some shimmer without having actual glitter getting everywhere. This Gold Glitter cardstock is so easy to cut on the Cricut. Select glitter cardstock and change the pressure to more and it cuts perfectly!

My mat is losing some of it’s stickiness so I add a little painters tape to the edges to keep it in place. This works great and doesn’t leave a residue when you peel it off.
Once all the pieces were cut, I assembled them on my workarea.

And from the bottom up, I used a variety of adhesives from liquid, strong double sided tape and foam adhesive for dimension.

And the finished cake topper!

I took a beautiful photo of the cake topper on the birthday cake; in fact, I took two, but when I went back to edit the photo, I noticed there was a fly on the left side of the triangle. I could not unsee the fly so I didn’t want to use the photo.
Cake toppers are so fun and easy to make and add so much to a plain cake. I hope you decide to try one yourself!
