4 Fall Thank You Cards with One Simple Layering Design

Creating a coordinated set of handmade cards does not have to mean designing four completely different cards. In this fall cardmaking tutorial, I’m showing you how one simple layout can become four beautiful thank you cards just by changing the cardstock colors. I’m Rick, and for this CutCardStock project, I combined dry embossing, layered die cuts, and a warm autumn color palette to create a set of four 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ cards.

The secret is choosing cardstock that does some of the design work for you. By mixing smooth and textured papers in rich fall colors, you can create plenty of visual interest without adding a lot of extra embellishments.

Choose a Fall Color Palette

For this card set, I wanted the colors to feel like a collection of autumn leaves. I used DCS Vanilla Bean Brown Cardstock, DCS Arrowhead Gray Cardstock, and DCS Burgundy Cardstock, along with Pop Tone Tangy Orange Cardstock and Lessebo Colors Premium SUNFLOWER YELLOW 83lb Discount Cardstock.

I especially like how the different finishes work together. The Vanilla Bean Brown has a canvas texture, while the Arrowhead Gray has a pearlized, textured finish. The combination adds subtle dimension even before the leaves are added. The smooth colored cardstocks then provide contrast.

For the card bases and embossed backgrounds, I used COUGAR Opaque NATURAL 100 lb. Card Stock. Its natural color gives the cards a softer look than bright white cardstock and works beautifully with the autumn palette.

Create the Card Bases

Start by cutting four pieces of COUGAR Opaque NATURAL 100 lb. Card Stock to 4 1/4″ x 11″.

Score each piece at 5 1/2″ and fold to create a top-folding 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card base.

Next, cut four pieces of COUGAR Opaque NATURAL 100 lb. Card Stock to 4″ x 5 1/4″. These pieces will become the embossed card fronts.

Keeping the card front slightly smaller than the card base creates a clean border around the edges. It is a simple design choice, but it gives the finished cards a more polished appearance.

Add Texture with Dry Embossing

Place each 4″ x 5 1/4″ card front into the Falling Leaves Embossing Folder and run it through your die-cutting machine.

The embossed leaf pattern adds texture without adding another color. I really like this approach for clean and simple cards because the background remains subtle while still giving the eye something interesting to discover.

Beginner tip: Make sure your cardstock is positioned evenly in the embossing folder before running it through your machine. A clean, consistent embossed impression will make a big difference in the finished card.

Build the Layered Leaf Clusters

Now it is time for the focal point.

Die cut four sets of three leaves using DCS Vanilla Bean Brown Cardstock, DCS Burgundy Cardstock, Pop Tone Tangy Orange Cardstock, and Lessebo Colors Premium SUNFLOWER YELLOW 83lb Discount Cardstock.

For the stems, use DCS Arrowhead Gray Cardstock. The pearlized texture is a fun detail because it gives the stems a subtle shimmer when they catch the light.

Assemble the leaves and arrange them into groups of three. Rather than making every card exactly the same, mix the colors between the four cards. This creates a coordinated set while still giving each card its own personality.

This is one of my favorite cardmaking techniques for creating a set. Keep the layout consistent and change the color combination. It saves time and makes it much easier to create multiple cards that look like they belong together.

Add the Thank You Sentiments

Die cut the word “Thanks” from DCS Vanilla Bean Brown Cardstock, DCS Burgundy Cardstock, Pop Tone Tangy Orange Cardstock, and Lessebo Colors Premium SUNFLOWER YELLOW 83lb Discount Cardstock.

Attach each leaf cluster to an embossed card front. I used thin foam adhesive squares to pop up the leaf clusters. This small amount of dimension helps the leaves stand out from the embossed background.

Add the coordinating “Thanks” sentiment below the leaves using liquid adhesive.

Notice that the sentiment color changes with each card. This is another easy way to create variation without changing the overall design.

Finish with a Simple Bow

To finish each card, tie a double bow from burlap twine.

Add a mini glue dot to the stems of the leaf cluster, then attach the bow. The natural look of the twine fits perfectly with the autumn color palette and adds one final bit of texture.

I like keeping the embellishment simple here. The embossed background, layered leaves, textured cardstock, and twine already provide plenty of visual interest.

A Simple Formula for Card Sets

One of the biggest takeaways from this project is that you do not need four different card designs to make a four-card set.

Start with:

  • One card layout
  • One background technique
  • One focal element
  • One sentiment
  • Several coordinating colors

Then change the colors or arrangement to create your variations.

This approach is especially helpful when you need several handmade cards in a short amount of time. It also makes a great starting point for experimenting with your own cardstock collection.

Create Your Own Fall Card Set

These four fall thank you cards combine dry embossing, die cutting, layering, and texture for a design that is simple enough for a beginner but still has plenty of detail for a more experienced cardmaker.

And the best part? The same design formula can be adapted for almost any season. Try it with winter greens and reds, spring florals, or even a monochromatic color palette.

What colors would you use for your own version of this fall card set? Leave a comment and let me know which color combination is your favorite, or share how you would adapt this simple layering design for another season!
