Graduation Medallion Pin

Nothing is more exciting than the end of school! For graduating students, this is especially true if you are about to finish high school or college. You may know a graduate, and if you do – I have a unique party favor idea for you. Hi, it’s Maureen with you today and I’m going to show you how to make a graduation medallion pin.

The typical colors for graduations are black, gold, silver or white – but this idea can be done in any theme colors you want. CutCardStock has them all! I’ve started with the DCS Discount Arrowhead Gray. This shimmery pearl paper is bound to make your graduate shine! Cut a strip at 6″ by 2.5″.

Score the Arrowhead Gray strip at every 1/2 mark on a scoring board. I like to score at the inch on one side, then flip it over and score again on the other. This reduces the risk of paper ripping when you fold.

Fold up the strip of paper like an accordion. Then, hold the paper together with a small rubber band. I like to use transparent hair bands. Find these in any retail store near you.

Next, bend out the paper and attach the ends together using invisible tape. Attach the tape to one wing of the paper, then fold it over to the other end to secure. If the paper doesn’t hold well, use a dot of hot glue for added security.

Insert a ribbon through the holes left in the middle of the medallion, threading it through to the back on both sides. These will become the tails of the pin.

Then, create the backing of your pin. I’ve cut a scalloped circle slightly larger than my medallion in Black Glitter cardstock. Punch 2 holes on either side of the center of this circle and thread the ribbon through both holes.

Take the hot glue again and secure the ribbon at the bottom, making sure they lay down like tails at the bottom of the circle. Then, adhere a jewelry pin backing to the back of the Black Glitter circle.

It’s time to add some flair to the front of your pin. I’ve cut a smaller Classic Crest Solar White circle and glued it to the front of the medallion. Then, I’ve die cut the graduation year in Stardream Metallic Gold and glued that to the front also. Finally, I’ve stamped the sentiment “Class Of” on Classic Crest Solar White and added it to the middle.

Final touches include adding a bow to the bottom, if desired, and a graduation cap sticker to the top of the numbers. You now have a fun gift to attach to a present or give to a graduate at a dinner party!

What other ideas would you come up with as medallion pins? I’ve made them for birthdays and even Mother’s Day!

I hope you enjoyed this inspiration today. Don’t forget to visit CutCardStock this month for the latest specials. See you next time!
