DIY Floral May Basket

Hi everyone, Patty here with you today! One of my favorite things about being a grandma is reliving all of the things my kids loved to do when they were little. The May Basket was a favorite, giving and receiving. My son would pretend he was a Ninja Turtle when he would deliver the baskets he (helped) make. My daughter was just so happy to make and give the baskets. You don’t want to get caught delivering the baskets, it was to be a surprise for friends and neighbors. We always put flowers and candy in ours. To continue with this tradition, I decided to make this DIY Floral May Basket.

In order to keep this tradition going, I am making these DIY baskets with my two year old grand daughter. We will deliver them to great grandma and her friends in the assisted living. They will have candy and some small bottles of hand lotion in them. Besides being fun, I think this results in teaching sharing, thinking of others and gives grandma more time with her grand daughter. All the good things.

Getting Started

First, I die cut all kinds of florals, leaves and the basket and parts in order to get this project started. I used Spellbinders Floral Bunny Basket die set and Spellbinders Colorful Expressions Blooms die set to create my projects. Because I needed to create a basket substantial enough to hold the little gifts, I created a small box bottom as well. IN addition, I cut a piece of Glama Kraft Cardstock into a 3 3/4 inch by 3 1/2 inch rectangle. In order to create sturdy sides, I scored a 1/2 inch in on all four sides which created the sides for the base. I cut 1 side of the squares that were created in the corners of the rectangle to create tabs. Finally, I scored the sides and then glued the tabs which resulted in a very sturdy base for my basket.

Creating the Basket

I cut out four baskets, including the basket trim and handles, using Glama Kraft Cardstock. I used the basket die and liner from Spellbinders Floral Bunny die set. For the interior liner that you glue to the basket and therefore, have a little color peep through, I used Discount Cardstock in Yellow Jacket. I ink blended over the baskets using Catherine Pooler’s Over Coffee ink. I glued the baskets to the liners and added the trim. Because I wanted the side basket parts to wrap around the base, I scored two of the basket panels at 1/2 inch on either side (you can see the scoring in the above photo). This allowed me to easily glue the sides to the base and resulted in a very sturdy basket. I glued the front and back panels to the base. Finally, to complete the basket portion, I glued on the handles.

Prepping the Florals

Growing up, we always decorated our baskets with flowers. Because this was how I was taught, this is what I taught my kids and as a result, my grand daughter. I used Discount Plum and Hydrangea Purple on one of the Tulips, Bell Flowers and also the flower in the front. To introduce pink, I cut an additional tulip and some Lily of the Valley from Pop Tone Pink Lemonade. I ink blended It’s a Girl Catherine Pooler ink over the edges of the pink Tulip and Lily of the Valley die cut pieces. This results in added depth on those flowers. After I cut the large floral out of Cougar White Cardstock, I ink blended the flower with Catching Rays and Do Si Do Catherine Pooler inks. To create a bit of greenery, I cut some leaves and stems out of Discount Cardstock Granny Smith Apple and Bonsai Cardstock.

Finishing Up the Floral Basket

I layed the florals out on the basket and glued them in the interior and on the handles. I will add a little bit of fill to each of the baskets, add the treats and then wrap them in cello, tying the top with some ribbon. Once I figured out how I wanted the basket to look, it came together quickly.
