Letterpressed Handmade Card
Hi everyone, Sarah here again. In this blog post, I’m going to create a letterpressed handmade card using the Spellbinders BetterPress. We’ll delve into the timeless art of letterpress design, a printing technique that infuses charm and sophistication into any project.
We’ll discover the enchanting potential of Tombow markers, adding a burst of color and creativity to letterpress designs, resulting in unique, personalized cards that resonate deeply with their recipients.
Let’s embark on a creative journey where traditional craftsmanship and contemporary flair come together to craft sentimental cards that speak volumes of care and affection.
When I bought my BetterPress, I purchased some of their recommended paper, but I wanted to branch out and test other types and brands of paper to see if I could find something comparable or better than what is recommended for the press.
If you aren’t familiar with the product, it is basically a letterpress, you put ink on the die, and you put it through your diecut machine so that it inks and embosses at the same time.
The Beauty of Letterpress
Letterpress is a centuries-old printing technique that involves creating an impression on paper using a raised surface. The process brings an unmistakable charm and elegance to any design.
Materials You’ll Need
- Thick cardstock paper or blank cards. For this project, I used Neenah 100% Cotton Letterpress Cardstock in Fluorescent White
- Letterpress design plate, stamp ink, and BetterPress
- Die Cut machine. I used my Big Shot
- Tombow markers (dual-tip markers are ideal)
- Adhesive, I used a tape runner to attach the design to the card base and foam tape to adhere the sentiment
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Prepare Your Design
Choose the letterpress design that suits the occasion or message you want to convey. Once you have your design, place it on the BetterPress in the desired location.

Step 2: Ink the Plate
Using your ink pad, apply a thin, even layer of ink onto the plate.
Step 3: Create the Impressions
Carefully place your cardstock or blank card onto the inked letterpress plate. Apply gentle and even pressure to ensure the ink transfers onto the paper by running it through your diecut machine.

Step 4: Add Color with Tombow Markers
After the ink has dried, it’s time to add some color to your letterpress design. Tombow markers are a fantastic choice for this task due to their vibrant colors and excellent blending capabilities.
Choose your color palette and use the brush tip of the markers to apply color to the recessed areas of the design. The brush tip allows for precise coloring, especially if your design has intricate details.

Step 5: Blending for a Smooth Finish
To create a smooth and blended look, use a watercolor brush or a fine paintbrush to gently blend the colors. Simply apply a small amount of water to the colored areas and use the brush to spread the pigment evenly.
Be careful not to oversaturate the paper with water to prevent bleeding or warping. Tombow markers are water-based and blend beautifully when used with water, adding depth and dimension to your design.
Step 6: Let It Dry
Allow your handmade card to dry completely before handling it further. Once dried, your card will showcase a stunning letterpress design complemented by beautifully blended Tombow marker colors.

Taking the time to create a letterpressed handmade card with a design colored in with Tombow markers can be a meaningful way to express your thoughts and emotions.
The combination of the traditional letterpress technique and the modern vibrancy of Tombow markers adds a unique and personal touch to your creations. Whether it’s for a birthday, anniversary, or just to let someone know you care, these handmade cards are sure to be cherished by their recipients.
So, gather your materials, unleash your creativity, and start making one-of-a-kind cards that will leave a lasting impression!
