Wooden Ornament Gifts

Welcome to the Holiday Countdown series for 2018! I hope you’re enjoying these quick and simple project ideas. I’ve created some wooden ornaments and wanted to share this idea with you.

Do you ever wish you had a little something to give friends and neighbors over the holidays? Maybe you don’t exchange gifts but want to do something special for someone. Or do you just want to decorate your own home with hand-made items? These little wooden ornaments are quick and easy to create. You can use any Christmas or holiday supplies you have available. I got this idea from the ladies over at Kitchen Sink Stamps.

My husband cut the wood disks for me. If you don’t have access to a saw (or a husband with a saw), you can purchase wood disks at craft stores or on Amazon. 

To pull these together quickly, I used POW glitter paper in Evergreen and Cricket with a Hero Arts tree die-cut. I’ve had this tree die forever, and the smaller size fit the wood disks perfectly. Look through your stash for something similar. You could add a little snowman or cut triangles to resemble a tree. 

After die-cutting the tree shapes, I scored them down the middle to make it easier to fold in half. A trick to easier scoring is wax paper. I rubbed wax paper over the glitter paper then lined up the tip of the tree at 3″ and the middle of the base in the same groove. 

Using the wax paper helps the scoring tool to slide better. When I finished scoring all the trees, I used a bone folder to fold them in half.

After folding all the trees, I adhered the two tree halves together with Tombow Mono Liquid Glue. Some of the trees I glued to the wood disk with the liquid glue. But then I decided to use a hot glue gun. I just wanted to make sure everything stayed put.  

I looked through my stash and found some little sentiments and stamps to finish off the ornaments. I used Versafine Onyx Black when stamping but also had success with other dye inks. 

If the wood disks were thinner, I used my MISTI so I could stamp the sentiments several times to get better coverage. (Of course, you have to do this before gluing the tree down.) 

I also got good coverage just using an acrylic block. If using an acrylic block, I found by applying a fair amount of pressure and holding the stamp in place for about 30 seconds I got better coverage. I think keeping the stamp in place a little longer gives the ink time to settle into the wood. 

I also stamped the back of each wood disk with another Christmas sentiment. 

I’m excited to share these with family and friends over the holidays. I think they will look great hanging from everyone’s Christmas tree.
