First Day of School Card Tutorial | Fun Card with CutCardStock
The first day of school is full of excitement, fresh supplies, and new adventures. Hi, friends! It’s Rick Adkins here, and today I’m sharing a bright and cheerful handmade card that celebrates that special milestone. For this project, I wanted to create a playful background using bold primary colors that instantly remind me of classic school supplies. By combining colorful die-cut letters with an adorable stamped owl, you can create a card that’s perfect for students, teachers, or anyone celebrating a new school year.
The best part? This project is beginner-friendly while offering enough layering and coloring to keep experienced cardmakers inspired.

Why I Chose CutCardStock Canvas Textured Cardstock
When I started planning this card, I knew I wanted to use the classic primary colors associated with back-to-school themes. That’s why I chose DCS Blue Calico Canvas Textured Cardstock, DCS YELLOW Jacket Canvas Textured Cardstock, and DCS Habanero Red Canvas Textured Cardstock. Their rich, vibrant colors create a fun alphabet background while the subtle canvas texture adds visual interest without overpowering the design.
For my card base and stamped images, I reached for Cougar White Smooth 110 lb CardStock. Its smooth surface is excellent for alcohol marker coloring and creates a sturdy A2 card base that holds layered die cuts beautifully.

- DCS Blue Calico Canvas Textured Cardstock

- DCS Habanero Red Canvas Textured Cardstock

Create the Card Base
Begin by cutting Cougar White Smooth 110 lb CardStock to 4-1/4″ x 11″. Score the cardstock at 5-1/2″, then fold and burnish the score line to create a sturdy top-folding A2 card base.
This heavyweight cardstock provides excellent support for layered die cuts and dimensional embellishments.
Build a Colorful Alphabet Background
Cut another piece of Cougar White Smooth 110 lb CardStock to 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″.
Next, cut one 5″ x 7″ piece each of:
- DCS Blue Calico Canvas Textured Cardstock
- DCS YELLOW Jacket Canvas Textured Cardstock
- DCS Habanero Red Canvas Textured Cardstock

Using an alphabet die set from your stash, die cut a variety of letters from each color. Arrange the letters across the white panel, allowing some to overlap slightly for a playful, scattered look. Once you’re happy with the arrangement, adhere each letter using liquid adhesive.
After the adhesive dries, use a Lacey Rectangle Die to cut the completed background panel.
This simple technique creates a custom patterned background that’s full of color and personality.
Stamp and Color the Focal Image
Stamp the owl from the Play, Learn, Grow Stamp Set onto Cougar White Smooth 110 lb CardStock using alcohol marker-friendly ink.
Color the owl with your favorite alcohol markers, then die cut it using the coordinating outline die.
Next, stamp the sentiment onto a strip of Cougar White Smooth 110 lb CardStock using Tuxedo Black Ink. Trim the strip to approximately 7/8″ – 1″ x 4-1/4″.
A smooth cardstock like Cougar White makes blending alcohol markers easy while keeping stamped details crisp and clean.

Assemble the Card
Adhere the completed alphabet background to the card base using liquid adhesive.
Attach the sentiment strip with foam adhesive to create dimension. Then adhere the owl over the sentiment using additional foam adhesive.
To finish the design, add a few white highlights to the owl using a white paint marker or white gel pen. These tiny details help bring the image to life and make the eyes sparkle.
One creative tip I love is to let some of the colorful alphabet letters peek out from behind the focal image. This keeps the background interesting while making sure the owl remains the star of the card.

Perfect for Back-to-School Celebrations
This cheerful design is perfect for celebrating a student’s first day of school, encouraging a favorite teacher, or simply sending a little good luck before a new school year begins. The combination of bright primary colors, layered die cuts, and alcohol marker coloring creates a fun card that’s approachable for beginners while still offering plenty of creative possibilities for more experienced cardmakers.
