Work of Heart Layout

Happy Wednesday!  I can’t believe that we are already in the middle of August.  This summer is just flying by!  Do you have any other hobbies besides crafting?  Cassie here with you today. I dabble with some sewing projects and that is what I am using as inspiration for today’s project.

I always loved this star pattern potholder that my great-grandmother made for my mom before I was even born.  Needless to say, the original one has seen better days.  It was almost 20 years ago when I first borrowed the potholder to figure out how to replicate it.  Since that time I have made these for several family members and I always manage to forget how much work they are.  This year I promised my husband that I would make some new ones for our household and I finally finished them this summer.  I wanted to finally create a layout about this pattern that is so special to me.

Getting Started

After taking the photo of my finished potholders I decided to pick out some colors of cardstock to recreate the pattern on my layout.

Once I had my cardstock colors, I cut out the paper strips that I needed to fold into triangles.  My strips are 2” x 4”.  I needed four strips of my center color (DCS Blast off Blue cardstock). Next, eight strips of the second color (DCS Aqua cardstock). And finally, 16 strips of the last color (DCS Canvas Textured Carribean Blue cardstock).

With the strips cut out it was time to score them and fold them into the triangles.  Once I scored them at a 45-degree angle, I folded them so the edges meet in the middle.  This was the part of the layout that took the longest time!  Once I had all of the strips folded into triangles it was time to start assembling my layout.

Creating the Background

I grabbed a piece of the DCS Canvas Textured Wedding Cake White cardstock to build my layout on. I marked the center of the page to help the alignment of the triangles.  The first color of triangles were placed so the points met in the middle of the page. I continued layering the triangles with the center point on a seam or fold of the previous layer. The last color is actually a double layer of triangles to cover any additional seams.

To create the finished look I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut two circles from DCS Blast off Blue cardstock and DCS Canvas Textured Wedding Cake White cardstock. I glued the two layers together to create the frame. With the thickness of the triangles I used foam tape to create the needed clearance.

Finishing the Page

Now with the background fully complete I needed to figure out how to finish my page.  After so much time and effort to create the background I didn’t want to cover too much of it.  I added some thread behind my photo as a tribute to the fact that this page is about a sewing project. My journaling is on a pull out card placed behind my photo with a ribbon bow. A title, puffy heart stickers and some stitching stickers finished off my page.
