Grad Fun(d) Jar

It’s the season once again for graduations and celebrations! It’s pretty common to make or buy a graduation card and put some money in there for the graduate. But what if you are looking for a more unique way to give money? Consider creating a graduation cap jar instead – it takes as much time as making a card and is an ideal table-setting gift too!

This time I’m turning to the fabulous metallic papers that CutCardStock has in stock (and on sale this month)! My go-to favorite is the Stardream Onyx Black paper for a project like this. Not only does it shine in the light but is also very sturdy and durable – perfect for a 3D project!

Start by cutting a Stardream Onyx Black square in whatever size your jar would require. Mine is a 5″ by 5″ because it is a 5″ jar. You should aim for 1″ overhang on all sides. Next, cut a Stardream Onyx Black strip of paper in a width of 1.25″ and long enough to go around your jar lid. You will need a 1.5″ round circle too. These will help you create the cap.

With the Onyx Black strip, score a line down the long edge about .25″ in from the edge. Next, cut small triangles up the edge to form tabs. Fold these tabs over, then glue the ends together to form a circle.

Glue the circle’s folded tabs to the backside of your Onyx Black square. Let this dry thoroughly – it may help you to use a low temperature glue gun for extra security.

Attach the circle to the top of the square and string a store-bought tassel underneath. You could also use an extra tassel from the graduate if you have one!

To make the letters, I’ve chosen a letterman die cut font and both the Stardream Metallic Onyx Black and Classic Linen Gold Pearl papers. Another great choice is the Stardream Gold or a school color too! I’ve cut the offset in one and the letter in the other, then glued them to the hat and front of the jar. Other ideas might be to add the graduate’s name or the year of graduation too!

To fill the jar, consider candy, paper shred or even coins. I also took a few dollar bills and wrapped them with a strip of Gold Pearl paper, trimming the end of the strip with a triangle and securing it. This makes them look like mini diplomas!

I set the cap on top of the jar and it is ready to give away! I purposely didn’t attach it so the recipient can reuse the jar later on. Feel free to pin this idea to Pinterest for that next graduation party and make sure to check out all the “dreamy” metallic papers CutCardStock has this month. See you next time!
