How to Combine Colored Cardstock for a Bold Floral Handmade Card

Spring is the perfect excuse to pull out your favorite bright cardstocks and start layering! Hi friends, Rick here, and today I’m sharing how I combined several gorgeous CutCardStock colors to create a bold and beautiful floral handmade card. If you love die cutting and layering, this project is going to be right up your alley.

This top-folding A2 card measures 4.25″ x 5.5″ and showcases how mixing vibrant and neutral cardstock can create depth and contrast without needing ink blending or coloring.

Why Cardstock Choice Matters

For this Spring Floral Card, I focused on pairing bold brights with earthy neutrals.

Here are the CutCardStock papers I used:

The combination of Gumdrop Green and Green Curry creates beautiful tonal contrast in the foliage. Pink Lemonade and Fruit Punch bring energy to the florals, while Hydrangea Purple softens the palette. Environmental Desert Storm adds warmth and grounds the design. Finally, Cougar White Super Smooth 160 lb provides a sturdy base that supports all the layering.

Step 1 – Create the Base

Cut a top-folding A2 card base (4.25″ x 5.5″) from Cougar White Super Smooth Cardstock 160 lb.

Next, trim a 4″ x 5.25″ panel from Green Curry Discount Cardstock and emboss it with a 3D embossing folder. This textured background instantly adds interest without extra bulk.

Step 2 – Die Cut the Florals

Using the Market Bloom Florals, Bow Toppers, and Grow With the Flow die sets, die cut your florals and leaves from:

Cut your bow from Environmental Desert Storm 100 lb for a natural accent.

Creative Tip: When combining multiple greens, choose one lighter and one darker shade. This keeps the design from looking flat and adds natural dimension.

Step 3 – Build the Focal Point

Arrange your florals in a loose cluster across the center of the embossed panel. Tuck leaves behind flowers and slightly overlap elements to create movement.

Die cut your sentiment from Hydrangea Purple and Pink Lemonade and layer it onto for a layer Cougar White 80 lb for a bold shadow effect. This layered sentiment becomes the visual anchor of the card.

Refer to the finished photo for placement inspiration.

Step 4 – Assemble and Add Dimension

Adhere the embossed panel to the card base. Use 2mm foam adhesive behind select florals and the sentiment for added depth.

Balance the composition by repeating colors throughout the cluster. This keeps the eye moving across the card.

Who Is This Card Perfect For?

This project is great for beginners who want to experiment with layering and color combinations. It is also ideal for mid-level crafters who love bold die cut designs and dimensional elements.

The beauty of using quality cardstock from CutCardStock is that the color and weight do most of the work for you.

I hope this project inspires you to mix and match your favorite cardstock shades and create your own bold floral card. Have you tried combining multiple greens in one project? Let me know in the comments below, and be sure to share your version. I would love to see what you create!
