Dare to be Fabulous with Ink Smooshing

Ink smooshing is a technique that is popular among card-makers and scrapbookers. It is an easy and fun way to create unique backgrounds and designs for your handmade cards. With just a few simple supplies, you can create stunning watercolor-like effects on your cardstock.

One of the wonderful things about ink smooshing is that it is a very forgiving technique. You don’t need to worry about being precise or perfect. In fact, the more imperfect your ink transfers are, the more interesting and artistic your design will look.

To get started, you will need to gather your supplies. You’ll need cardstock (I used Pop Tone Cardstock in Sweet Tooth), ink pads in the colors of your choice, a non-porous surface, like a glass mat, a water sprayer, and a piece of paper towel. Stamps, sentiments, and other embellishments are optional.

Once you have your supplies, you can begin by preparing your ink mixture. Simply press the ink pads onto your non-porous surface in a random pattern. You can use as many colors as you like, but make sure they blend well together. Once you’ve applied the ink, spritz a little water onto the surface to activate the ink and make it blend.

Next, you will transfer the ink onto your cardstock. Simply place your cardstock onto the inked surface, making sure to cover the entire cardstock. Press the cardstock onto the inked surface and then lift it up carefully. You should see a beautiful, marbled effect on your cardstock.

It’s important to let your ink dry completely before moving on to the next step. Depending on the amount of ink you use and the humidity in your environment, this may take a few minutes. You can speed up the drying process by using a heat gun or hair dryer.

Once your ink is dry, you can add stamps, sentiments, and other embellishments to your card. Use your imagination and creativity to create a unique design that reflects your personal style. You can also experiment with different techniques, like heat embossing or using stencils, to create even more interesting effects.

Finally, finish your card by adding any additional embellishments or finishing touches. You can add a border, a ribbon, or even a few rhinestones or pearls to give your card a little extra sparkle. The possibilities are endless, and with each new project, you’ll discover new techniques and designs that you love.

Ink smooshing is a versatile and fun technique that anyone can try. Whether you’re a seasoned card-maker or a beginner, it’s a great way to add a unique touch to your handmade cards. So go ahead and give it a try! You never know what beautiful designs you’ll create.
