Shadow Box with Rolled Cardstock Flowers
In the world of crafts and DIY projects, few things are as satisfying as creating a visually stunning piece that brings a touch of nature indoors. If you’re searching for a creative and enchanting way to decorate your living space, look no further than a shadow box adorned with rolled cardstock flowers. This delightful project allows you to showcase your artistic skills while infusing your surroundings with a burst of vibrant colors and textures. In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the process of crafting your very own shadow box masterpiece that highlights the beauty of rolled cardstock flowers and make a great teacher gift in the process.
Materials Needed
- Shadow box frame
- Cardstock. For this project I used PopTones Cardstock in Blue Raspberry and Grapesicle.
- Scissors or cutting machine. I used my Siser Juliet Cutting machine.
- Craft glue or hot glue gun.
- Quilling tool, tweezers, bobby pin, or something to use to hold the end of the flower while rolling. I used a quilling tool.
- Paint or decorative paper for the background or to color the cardstock (optional). I used Tim Holtz Distress ink in Peacock Feathers and Hero Arts Hero Hues ink in Grape Slush.
- Additional embellishments (ribbons, beads, or other decorative items)
Step 1: Selecting the Design and Preparing the Cardstock:
The first step is to decide on the design and layout of your shadow box. Consider the color scheme and the overall theme you want to achieve. Once you have an idea in mind, gather your cardstock papers in the desired colors. Thicker cardstock works best for this project, as it holds its shape more effectively.
Step 2: Creating the Rolled Cardstock Flowers:
Using scissors or a cutting machine, cut the cardstock. Feel free to experiment with varied sizes for added variety. The size of the rolled flower after cutting is not the same size as the flower when it’s rolled. For this project, my cut flowers were about 5”. Once they were rolled, they are approximately an inch in diameter.

Before I rolled the flowers, I inked the edges of each one. When I rolled the flowers, I made sure the inked edge was on the outside of the roll.

Next, take a cut piece of cardstock and wrap it tightly around using a quilling tool or other tool, starting from one end. Keep rolling until you reach the other end, and then carefully slide off the rolled strip. Glue the bottom end of the flower to the base to secure the shape. I used hot glue to secure each flower. Repeat this process with different colors to create a beautiful assortment of flowers.

Step 3: Assembling the Shadow Box:
Before attaching the flowers, you can paint the background of the shadow box or cover it with decorative paper for added visual interest. Allow the background to dry completely before proceeding.
Once the background is ready, it’s time to arrange and attach the rolled cardstock flowers. Place them in the desired arrangement inside the shadow box, experimenting with different positions until you achieve a pleasing composition. Use craft glue or a hot glue gun to secure the flowers in place.
For a three-dimensional effect, you can attach floral wire or skewers to the back of some flowers. This will allow you to adjust the height and position of the flowers, creating depth and dimension within the shadow box.

Step 4: Adding Finishing Touches:
To further enhance the beauty of your shadow box, consider adding additional embellishments. Ribbons, beads, or other decorative items can be strategically placed among the flowers to add an extra touch of charm and personalization. Get creative and let your imagination run wild!
For this project, I cut a saying out of adhesive vinyl and applied it to the glass. I mirrored the saying and applied it to the inside of the glass, so the glass can be cleaned without affecting the vinyl. Most adhesive vinyl is the same color on both sides, but make sure first because there are some that are not the same color.

Conclusion:
Designing a shadow box with rolled cardstock flowers is a delightful and rewarding craft project that allows you to express your creativity and bring a touch of nature’s beauty into your living space. With a few simple materials and some artistic flair, you can create a stunning visual display that will captivate and enchant anyone who lays eyes on it. So gather your supplies, let your creativity bloom, and embark on this exciting journey of crafting your own rolled cardstock flower shadow box. The result will be a unique piece of art that brings joy and inspiration to your home.
