Hey everyone. It’s me again and I’m crazy excited to share this home decor idea with you. I discovered a hot new trend at the Indie craft fairs in Chicago and Austin this past year: framing with embroidery hoops! Just Google Hoop Art or search on hoop art in Pinterest and you’ll see what I mean.
I love that this vintage art form is coming back. Back about a squillion years ago (in the 70’s and 80s) we created wall art by framing our needlework with embroidery hoops – proving once again that I am vintage – but not antique! It’s just a fun and inexpensive way to show off your creations.
Hoop art doesn’t just have to be made with fabric. If you like making cards, I’m going to show you how you can modify a card design to create fun home decor. Your friends will think you’re a genius.
You’ll need:
- a wooden embroidery hoop. Standard hand-held hoops are usually 3″ to 12″. I used a 4″ hoop for this sunflower project and a 3″ hoop for this tutorial.
- a liquid adhesive that works with paper and wood, like Tombow Mono Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue;
- a circle shape out of cardstock that’s the same size as the inner ring of the embroidery hoop. Use either a circle cutter or my preferred method, circle die cuts.
- baby wipes to clean excess glue off the hoop ring.
- If you’re not familiar with embroidery hoops, just loosen the screw at the top of the embroidery hoop and separate the two rings.
- Using the pen point of the Tombow Mono Multi-Purpose Liquid Glue, put a thin line of glue around the top of the inner ring (the ring that doesn’t have hardware).
- Using tweezers, cover the ring with the circle shape. Tweezers will give you more control as you place the circle over the ring. The liquid glue is repositional until the glue dries, so you can make adjustments.
- Use the baby wipes to remove any excess glue. It’ won’t hurt your paper, but still, be gentle.
- Place the ring with the screw over the inner ring. Tighten the screw, closing it enough to grip the inner ring.
Now you have this fabulous canvas to stamp on, embellish, and even hand sew onto. Have fun!
