Hi friends! Rick here, and today I’m sharing a handmade patriotic card that combines die cutting, dry embossing, stamping, and heat embossing. If you’re looking for an easy 4th of July card that delivers plenty of impact without complicated techniques, this project is a great place to start.
One of my favorite things about patriotic cards is the classic red, white, and blue color palette. For this project, I chose cardstock from CutCardStock because the colors work beautifully together and create a bold, festive design that’s perfect for celebrating Independence Day.
Create the Card Base
Begin by cutting a piece of Cougar White Smooth 110 lb CardStock to 4-1/4″ x 11″.
Score the cardstock at 5-1/2″ and fold it in half to create a top-folding A2 card base measuring 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″.
The heavier weight cardstock provides a sturdy foundation and helps the finished card feel substantial.
Add Texture with Dry Embossing
Cut a piece of Cougar White Smooth 80 lb CardStock to 4″ x 5-1/4″.
Place the panel inside a small stars embossing folder and run it through your die-cutting machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Next, cut a piece of DCS Holiday Discount Card Stock Habanero Red Cardstock to 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″. Adhere the embossed panel to the red layer using liquid glue.
Attach the completed background panel to the card base.
The subtle embossed star pattern adds texture without overwhelming the design.
Create the Patriotic Focal Panel
Die cut three stars from DCS Holiday Discount Card Stock Wedding Cake White Cardstock.
Next, cut three squares from DCS Discount Card Stock Wild Blueberry Navy Cardstock measuring 1-1/4″ x 1-1/4″ each.
Cut a strip of DCS Holiday Discount Card Stock Habanero Red Cardstock measuring 1-3/4″ x 5″.
Adhere one white star to each navy square. Then attach the squares to the red strip, spacing them evenly from top to bottom.
This simple layout creates a strong focal point while keeping the card clean and organized.
Stamp and Heat Emboss the Sentiment
Stamp the “Happy 4th of July” sentiment onto a scrap of Wild Blueberry Navy Cardstock using Versamark Ink.
Cover the image with White Detail Embossing Powder and heat emboss until smooth and shiny.
Allow the sentiment to cool before die cutting it with the coordinating die.
Heat embossing is an easy way to create crisp, professional-looking sentiments that stand out against darker cardstock.
Assemble the Card
Attach the red star panel to the left side of the card front.
Next, adhere the heat-embossed sentiment near the bottom of the card using foam adhesive strips for added dimension.
The combination of layered cardstock, embossed texture, and raised sentiment creates visual interest while maintaining a clean and simple design.
Creative Tip
When creating patriotic cards, try combining texture with bold color blocking. The embossed background adds depth, while the strong red, white, and blue layers keep the design eye-catching and festive without needing lots of embellishments.
Finished Card
This card is perfect for beginner cardmakers who want to explore multiple techniques on one project. It’s also a great design for clean-and-simple fans who enjoy strong graphic layouts and classic color combinations.
The patriotic color palette created with Wild Blueberry Navy, Habanero Red, and Wedding Cake White Cardstock makes this card ideal for celebrating the Fourth of July, military holidays, or other patriotic occasions throughout the year.
