Get Well Cards

Hey everybody, Happy Friday! Hopefully you’re finally seeing some Spring weather and have something fun planned this weekend! Leslie here, sharing a tutorial for making a set of four get well cards. These aren’t your average get well cards… they feature the old technique of phantom die cutting! You may have more recently heard this technique referred to as the eclipse technique. It’s super simple and yields a terrific three-dimensional aspect to the sentiment on your card front. I used a variety of our cardstock which I will outline below. Let me show you how I made these cards!

Card Bases & Panels

Firstly, decide which patterned paper you want to use for the backgrounds. Having tons of digital papers on my laptop that I never remember to use, that’s what I went for. Printed a colorful sheet on Classic Crest 80# Solar White and cut it in quarters. Digital paper or store-bought patterned paper can be used for this project.

Secondly, cut four coordinating panels from Textured Pearl Hummingbird Teal, Lessebo Salt Water Blue, Aqua and Pop Tone Limeade cardstock. These will layer beneath the digital paper panels.

Thirdly, cut four panels from Pop Tone Black Licorice and four from Classic Crest 80# Solar White for the inside.

Fourthly, utilize four Classic Crest 80# Folded Cardstock Bases – they are fabulous and a huge timesaver!

Prepare Front Panels & Sentiments

For demonstration purposes, I’m going to show the process for one card. Just repeat the same process for the rest of the cards. Apply adhesive sheet to the back of each digital paper panel. As you already know, when making multiple cards, it’s always easier to work in assembly-line fashion.

Additionally, apply adhesive sheet to the back of two small pieces of Classic Crest Double Thick 165# Solar White. You’ll use these for two die cut sentiments layered together, and will need two for each card. Using two layers of this thick cardstock will yield a nice three-dimensional sentiment.

Die cut your sentiment into both small pieces of the double thick cardstock. Use a pokey tool to remove the small bits of cardstock from the loops in the h, g and s. Remove the release paper from the back of one of the sentiments and adhere it on top of the other one.

Afterwards, cut the sentiment into the digital paper panel and leave the entire die cut in the die. DO NOT remove the small bits of paper from the loops in the h, g and s this time. You will need to place these back into the negative spaces in a later step.

Assemble Front Panels for Get Well Cards

Adhere the digital paper panel to the corresponding cardstock panel by removing the release paper from the back.

Remove the release paper from the back of the stacked sentiment and place it into the negative space.

Remember we left the small bits of paper in the loops of the h, g and s earlier. Carefully remove those from the die, take off the release paper, and place them in the appropriate letters. You will need to use tweezers and a pokey tool to get these in place. Will seem tedious but it’s well worth it!

Now all you have left is the larger digital paper die cut that’s still left in the die.

Let’s finish it up by carefully removing the digital paper die cut from the die and removing the release paper. Affix this die cut on top of the double thick layered sentiment. Voila – check out that cool phantom die cutting!

Stamp Inside Sentiment

Place a get well soon sentiment stamp on your positioner and stamp all four white inside panels. Layer each one onto a black panel.

Lastly, adhere the front and inside panels to the card bases. Also, affix several enamel dots of a complimentary color to the front of each card.

Finished Cards

Standing the cards up shows the technique much better than lying flat with bright lights. But I also wanted to show how the sheet of digital paper had been cut for the four cards.

Summing up, these are the other products I used:
PAPER: Art For Cards Lime Showers digital paper from My Scrap Chick printed on 80# Solar White
STAMPS: Ranger Letter It Occasions clear stamps
INK: Versafine Onyx Black ink
DIES/PUNCHES: CUTplorations hugs die (from STAMPlorations)
