Hey everybody – happy Wednesday! Are you a fan of interactive fun folds? How about butterflies? Well, either/or… I got you covered today! Leslie here, sharing a tutorial for making an interactive butterfly card. The butterflies are hidden until you open the card and then they flitter out so you can see them! This friendship card could be tailored for a birthday, anniversary, or just because. I used Pop Tone Sno Cone, Jet Stream Blue, Surf, and Hummingbird paired with Neenah Solar White. These gorgeous colors complimented patterned paper, stamps, dies, and an embossing folder in my stash. I love these colors together!
Cut Card Base & Layers
POP TONE SNO CONE CARDSTOCK:
Card base: 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″, scored at 4-1/4″
Front background panel: 4″ x 5-1/4″
Inside panel: 2-1/2″ x 5-1/2″
Interactive mechanism: 1-1/2″ X 4-1/4″, scored at 1/2″, 1-1/4″, 2″ and 3-1/2″
PATTERNED PAPER (FROM STASH):
Front embellishing strip: 1-1/2″ x 4″
CLEAR ACETATE (FROM STASH):
Strips to anchor butterflies: 1/4″ x 1-1/2″
NEENAH CLASSIC CREST 80# SOLAR WHITE CARDSTOCK:
Inside sentiment panel: 2-1/4″ x 5-1/4″
HUMMINGBIRD, JET STREAM BLUE, and SURF CARDSTOCK SCRAPS (NOT SHOWN):
Butterfly die cuts
Prepare Background
Spritz the front background panel with a shimmer spray and let dry. Once dry, run the panel through the Big Shot with a script embossing folder.
Create Butterflies
Using butterfly dies, cut one from Hummingbird, two from Jet Stream Blue, and one from Surf cardstock. Scraps are the ticket (if you have any) so you don’t have to cut into full sheets of cardstock! Cut the bodies from the same colored cardstock (to make it easy) and color the bodies with a black marker. Assemble the butterflies and set them aside.
Score & Fold Interactive Mechanism
The interactive mechanism has already been scored at 1/2″, 1-1/4″, 2″ and 3-1/2″ as above. Score again in an X formation from the top right of the 1/2″ score line down to the bottom left of the 2″ score line. Repeat from the top left of the 1/2″ score line down to the bottom right of the 2″ score line. The two lines on the X should intersect on the 1-1/4″ score line.
Push the sides of the X score lines on the mechanism inward and pinch. This will form a point that should be facing the right side.
Adhere Interactive Mechanism
Line up the left-hand 1/2″ score line on the interactive mechanism with the center score line on the card base. Apply adhesive to the right-hand 1/2″ flap, fold the flap under, and adhere the mechanism to the card base. Center it between the top and bottom edges of the card base. Next, flatten out the mechanism and apply adhesive to the left-hand 1/2″ flap and close the card. The photo below shows how the mechanism should now look.
Add Acetate Strips
Apply either one medium or two small glue dots to the right-most triangle shapes on the mechanism. Add the two acetate strips, lining up the left edges with the score line.
Assemble Front Panel
Now it’s time to adhere the spritzed and embossed front panel to the front of the card base. Also adhere the embellishing strip just slightly below the center area.
Adhere Inside Panel
Open the card and apply adhesive only to the left half of the interactive mechanism. Line up the upper and lower edges of the inside panel with the card base and press the panel into place.
Stamp Sentiments
Using your choice of stamps, stamp a front sentiment in teal ink on a Solar White scrap and cut it with a stitched circle die. Additionally, stamp an inside sentiment on the white inside sentiment panel in the same teal ink.
Glue Sentiments & Butterflies
Grab the circle sentiment and two butterflies, and adhere them to the card front, using thin foam squares under the wings for a little dimension.
Similarly, adhere the other two butterflies to the acetate strips on the inside so they are seen when the card opens. Be mindful, however, of the placement so they don’t stick out beyond the edges of the card.

Add some iridescent gemstones for a little bling. I added one to the center of the flowers on the embellishing strip.
