Monthly Christmas Inspiration Series Eclipse Style

New ways to eclipse and less holiday stress- that is what I am sharing today.  Hello, I am Karen Hasheck and today I am starting a new series on the CutCardStock Blog. Each month I am going to post a new Christmas card to encourage you to get ahead of the holiday rush.

The eclipse technique where the pattern flows from the background through raised objects on cards is not new. It started with alphabet dies years ago.  New slatted dies have made the look trendy again.

Cut Cardbase and Patterned Paper

To make a card like this you just need two pieces of identical patterned paper and a slatted circle die. This lovely scene from the Winter Wonderland Paper Pad at CutCardStock is perfect. The Slatted Circle Die is from a set by Craft Addiction UK.

First cut a square card base out of the beautiful Stardream Metallic Copper Cardstock. The size is 5 1/2 by 11 inches.  Score in half at 5 1/2 inches.

Next cut two identical pieces of Winter Wonderland 5 ¼ square. Cut the slatted circle out of one of the pieces. The sentiment is also going to be eclipsed. Cut the shadow of Merry Christmas out of the other winter scene square.

Cut Die Cut Pieces

To achieve the eclipse look, the slatted ornament needs to be raised. The Stardream Metallic Copper Cardstock piece that was left after cutting the card base is heavyweight and perfect for this. Cut two slatted circles and glue them together.

Next cut the Merry Christmas die from Crealies out of Royal Linen Midnight Blue Cardstock and glue it onto the shadow piece.

How To Eclipse the Ornament

Next cut the slatted circle die out of the Winter Wonderland Scene. Glue it onto the two thick copper cardstock slatted circles carefully so they all align. Use the 2nd piece of Winter Wonderland patterned paper to show where to attach the raised circle piece. The pattern from the paper will flow from the background through the ornament.  This creates the “eclipse” look. Glue on the ornament hanger also cut out of the Copper Stardream Metallic Cardstock

The eclipse technique is perfect for sentiments too.  Cut the shadow of “Merry Christmas” out of the pattered winter scene. Additionally, cut the shadow die out of fun foam to raise it. This is a second way to achieve the height instead of layering several layers of thick cardstock. Lastly, glue the die cut sentiment onto the shadow layers and then into the die cut hole.

I hope this card inspires you to try some eclipse cards and maybe get ahead of your holiday cardmaking.  Then join me in sending some of that handmade joy out into our world!

Cardmaking Joy & Hugs,

Karen
