Colorful Birthday Layout

Can you believe that we are just days away from September?  Although we are fully into Back to School mode around here I wanted to document my sweet daughter turning 17 earlier this month.

To celebrate her birthday we hopped on a ferry and set sail to a nearby island for some shopping and eating.  One of our stops included local made ice cream and that is where I snapped this picture for my layout. I wanted to create a birthday layout that included a lot of different colors, so that is where I started.

Getting Started

I first grabbed a piece of the DCS Canvas Textured Wedding Cake White cardstock and cut a large frame and the number “17” using my Silhouette Cameo.  After that, I picked out a rainbow of colors for my background.

Now that I had my colors picked out, I cut two strips from each color that were 2.25” wide.  I used: DCS Red Pepper cardstock, DCS Canvas Textured Pink Tutu cardstock, Bazzill Canvas Texture Peach cardstock, DCS Canvas Textured Wild Salmon cardstock, DCS Light Yellow cardstock, DCS Canvas Textured Seafoam Green cardstock, DCS Canvas Textured Bonsai Green cardstock, DCS Canvas Textured Surf cardstock, DCS Blast off Blue cardstock and Pop Tone Grapesicle cardstock.

Now that I have all the strips cut out I grabbed three of my scalloped border punches and alternated the punches and strips until they were all done.

Creating the Background

Once I had all the strips punched, it was time to start creating the background. I decided to keep the two strips of each color together instead of alternating them so that each color consisted of a thicker color block on the background.  It was time to adhere the strips together leaving about ½” between the rows. I continued layering the strips together until they were all glued together.

At this point I added the frame around the edge of the paper strips.  I also grabbed the numbers and pierced holes and added hand stitching using black DMC floss around the outside of each number.  I then added them on top of the paper strips using foam tape.

Finishing the Page

Now with the background fully complete I needed to figure out how to finish my page.  First, I added a DCS Black cardstock mat to my photo. Then, I added the photo to my page so you could still clearly see the oversized number.  Next, I grabbed a black alpha sticker set to add the rest of my title above and below the number.  As a finishing touch to the layout I added some black star gems.

I really love how the white cardstock and pops of black pull the whole page together.
