Dragonflies for Good Luck!

Hey everybody! I hope you had a great weekend! Do you believe dragonflies bring good luck? I’ve always felt like they symbolize good luck and good fortune along with strength and creativity! Leslie here with a tutorial for making a fun one-piece Z-fold card. I used Stardream Metallic Flame paired with Bright Gold Foil and Neenah Classic Crest Solar White for this good luck card. I’ve always made Z-folds with separate strips so I thought it would be fun to simplify the design into one piece.

Cut Card Base & Layers

Start by cutting a 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ card base from 110# Neenah Classic Crest Solar White.

Secondly, cut two layering panels at 4″ x 5-1/4″ from Bright Gold Foil.

Thirdly, cut two layering panels at 3-3/4″ x 5″ from Stardream Metallic Flame.

Create Dragonflies

Stamp the dragonflies on 80# Neenah Classic Crest Solar White, color with ultra fine point markers, and die cut them. Gemstones were added to two of these and I added details to all four with a white paint pen.

Cut, Score & Fold Card Base

Push the short edge of the cardstock to the top of the trimmer and line the left edge up at the 2-1/8” mark. Cut from 2-1/8” down to 6-3/8”.

Rotate the cardstock counter clockwise and score at 2-1/8” from the top edge down to the cut line. Score a second time at 4-1/4” from top to bottom. Then score a third time at 6-3/8” from the cut line down to the bottom edge.

Fold on the score lines to create the z-fold. Mountain fold the score line at 2-1/8” and valley fold the top of the center score line. Once again, mountain fold the bottom of the center score line and valley fold the score line at 6-3/8”. Burnish all folds with a bone folder.

Create Panels

All of the gold and orange panels are cut with the short edge at the top of the trimmer. For the left-hand gold panel, line the left edge up at the 1-7/8” mark and cut down to 3-3/8”. Rotate the panel clockwise and cut from the horizontal cut line down to the bottom edge.

Similarly, for the right-hand gold panel, line the left edge up at the 2-1/8” mark and cut from 3-1/8” down to the bottom edge. As before, rotate the panel (counter clockwise this time) and cut from the horizontal cut line down to the bottom edge.

Now we’ll work on the left-hand orange panel. Line the left edge up at the 2-3/8” mark and cut down to 3-3/8”. Turn this panel clockwise and cut from the horizontal cut line down to the bottom edge.

Finally, for the right-hand orange panel, line the left edge up at the 2-1/8” mark and cut from 2-7/8” down to the bottom edge. Same as before, turn this panel (counter clockwise) and cut from the horizontal cut line down to the bottom edge.

Adhere Panels

Adhere the layered panels to the left and right sides of the card base.

Stamp & Die Cut Sentiments

Orange ink is a great choice to stamp the front and back sentiments. Use stacked die cuts for a little visual interest.

Adhere Dragonflies & Sentiments

Use liquid glue to adhere three of the dragonflies. Adhere the fourth dragonfly to an acetate strip with clear adhesive dots. This will give the illusion of flight.

Next, adhere the front and back sentiments.

Complete Project

Add gold pearls to left and right sides to complete the project.
