“You Rock!” scrapbook layout with Shaker

When you meet a Country Rock Star, you Document that!

Good morning y’all! Misty (@Mommyofkidz) here with you today sharing a bright and colorful scrapbook layout. Have you ever started a project and decided to challenge yourself and go completely out of your comfort zone? Well, that’s exactly what I did with this layout! Not only did I decide to turn a very large cut file into a shaker element, I also piled on the watercolor and mixed media. I had so much fun creating this!
With Mother’s Day coming up soon, I wanted to do something for my Mom. The problem was, I really wasn’t in the mood to make a floral and feminine layout like I usually do. Not only that, the photos that I really really wanted to scrap for my Mom were the ones of her meeting Sundance Head, the winner of one of the seasons of The Voice. Funny thing was- I went to school with Sundance and she had known him when he was a kid. She just didn’t remember ever meeting him…but she sure was a fan girl when she met him after his Winning Season on The Voice!
So, I knew that I wanted this layout to be BOLD, and LOUD, and VIBRANT. Therefore, I pulled out some vibrant colors of cardstock to work with. To start, the Lessebo Amazon Dark Teal is one of my absolute FOAVORITE colors, so I knew I would use this one. I also grabbed the Lessebo Dawn Maroon along with a few sheets each of the Stardream Metallic ONYX 12×12 and DCS Discount Card Stock: Canvas Textured Wedding Cake White Card Stock.

Getting Started

To begin, I set up my Cricut to cut the file that I would be using. I chose to do the file itself along with the shadow so that it was easier to build the shaker. First, I used DCS Discount Card Stock: Canvas Textured Wedding Cake White Card Stock to cut the mail file. Next, Stardream Metallic ONYX 12×12 would provide the sturdy shadow which I cut twice. The first one was layered and glued with the white outline, then faux stitched with a white gel pen. The second cut was used for the base, and the various colors of cardstock would fill up the wedges.

Once the top and bottom pieces were assembled, It was time to add foam tape in between them and fill each wedge with a sequin mix to form the shaker. I have tons of sequin mixes that I never use, so I decided to go all out and use a different one on each wedge! Notice the patterned paper from the Simple Stories Line coordinates perfectly with the Lessebo colors! I wanted to use all the colors!! Alas, I had to settle for only a few. Once the shaker element was complete, I was thrilled! I fell in love and wanted to stop there…it was so freaking COOL! However, I was making this for my Mom…not myself. Therefore I went on to the next step of the layout.

Getting Messy with Water Colors!

One of my favorite songs that Sundance sings is “Leave Her Wild”. As you can see below, I chose to make this background “WILD” in honor of that song. Using a sheet of DCS Discount Card Stock: Canvas Textured Wedding Cake White Card Stock, I began prepping base of the layout for the wild colors. After tracing the outside of the shaker element to notate the placement, I set to work getting messy. Notice that I also penciled in what color that I wanted to use at each section. Since all of the pencil marks would be covered, I didn’t worry about erasing them. Also, once the large shaker element goes on, the entire center would be covered, so I also did not bother with painting the entire page. I focused only on the areas that I knew would be exposed.

Finishing Up

Oh My Goodness!!! Isn’t this the coolest thing! Ya’ll, I do not play with so MUCH color very often, and I have NO IDEA WHY! After the background page had completely dried, I got so excited when I lay the shaker down onto it! It was fantabulous! Also, it was definitely going to showcase these photos perfectly! After placing my photo strip, I added in lots of “rock” Stars, some Nuvo Drops, and a bit of hidden journaling. Since the layout itself was so bright and bold, I did not want to add too much more for fear of it getting “Lost”. I could have added so much more…as I took a TON of photos. However, the three that I chose perfectly represented the day that My Mom and Step Dad met my friend from school, who, to them, was a MAJOR Country Rock Star!

Mother’s Day is Coming…

Once I finished the entire layout, I realized that I had successfully gone completely outside of my “BOX” and created a layout for my Mom that did not have a single flower on it! Not only was it flowerless, it also did not have the color PINK on it anywhere! (Well, maybe a couple in the multi-colored sequin mix) But…Holy Moly!!! I guess that goes to show that our Moms don’t need all that frilly lacy stuff. They would also love something messy and wild…they just don’t know it yet!
